Misinterpretation lrg.jpg

Misinterpretation reflects on how easily the meaning of a message can change as it passes between people.

At the centre of the work, the mechanical heart represents the mechanism through which we listen and interpret what we hear.

We often filter messages through our own experiences, assumptions and reasoning. Irrespective of the intention behind the original message, the listener can alter its meaning drastically by applying these filters to the message.

The work reflects on the fragile nature of communication and the ease with which meaning can shift. In our attempts to make sense of one another, we sometimes analyse so carefully that we lose sight of the feeling that gave rise to the message in the first place.
